Jim Mai
Jim Z. Mai, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., joined the Radiation Epidemiology Branch (REB) as a postdoctoral fellow in 2019, and was promoted to a research fellow in 2023. Dr. Mai completed his clinical training, received master's degrees in epidemiology and biostatistics, and obtained a Ph.D. in cancer epidemiology from the University of Hong Kong. For his dissertation research, he conducted a multicenter nasopharyngeal carcinoma case-control study and analyzed the pooled prospective cohort studies to examine the associations of nasopharyngeal carcinoma risk with genetic susceptibility, quitting smoking, Epstein-Barr virus, vitamin D, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. He was the recipient of the 2021 Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics Fellows’ Award for Research Excellence, 2022 NIH Summer Research Mentor Award, and 2023 NIH Fellows Award for Research Excellence.
In REB, Dr. Mai studies cancer risks associated with exposure to UV radiation, photosensitizing agents, and their molecular mechanisms among SEER and PLCO participants, and U.S. radiologic technologists, and Medicare recipients, under the mentorship of Elizabeth K. Cahoon, Ph.D., Earl Stadtman Investigator.
